In the mid-1990's, BELLSOUTH looked at their strategic portfolio and asked "what businesses are we in and what businesses do we want to be in?" One answer that came back was that they were in the telecommunications business, but did not want to be remain in the business of building and maintaining facilities. They decided to outsource their facilities work. A competition was held. Information technology -- the real-time ability to keep BELLSOUTH in the loop was an important factor in their decision to outsource their facilities work to Bovis (now Bovis Lend Lease). The diagrams at the right and below depict the solution that was developed and deployed to manage BELLSOUTH's facilities across ten states.
