Gutenberg II:  Transformation of Education in
Primary and Secondary Schools

Gutenberg II –  Transforming public education through a combination of software, hardware, pedagogy and curriculum in a standards achievement based educational system.

Preferred Future State:  Envision and plan for the use of low-cost tablet computers coupled with cloud computing to capitalize on the innate ability of today’s youth to use handheld devices to facilitate their learning, reduce school costs, and teach 21st century skills.

A Comprehensive Framework Impacting All Stakeholders

The technology adoption lifecycle model describes the adoption or acceptance of a new product or innovation, according to the demographic and psychological characteristics of defined adopter groups. (1)


Gutenberg II will be a disruptive innovation causing a significant change of behavior for almost all stakeholders.


For Gutenberg II the most difficult step will be making the transition between visionaries (early adopters) and pragmatists (early majority). This is the chasm shown in the above diagram.

Our on-going work is to educate children, our future citizens.   We are in the process of transforming public education.    

Using low-cost tablet computers coupled with cloud computing to capitalize on the innate ability of today’s youth to use handheld devices to facilitate their learning, reduce school costs, and teach 21st century skills.

  1. Replacing time-based structure with standards/achievement based structure.  
  2. Replacing school as a physical location with school as a state-of-mind with particular work ethic and goal.  
  3. Replacing teachers as the deliverer of curriculum with teachers as the expert guides to learning materials.  
  4. Replacing students as receptacles of knowledge with students as information consumers/processors and problem solvers.  
  5. Replacing top-down factory hierarchical structure with Deming-like bottom-up operational problem-solving hierarchical structure.
  6. Replacing the students' factory-model educational experience with the information-model educational experience.
